Porcelain Inlays and Onlays At The Warren Smile Center in New Jersey
Yearly professional cleanings are an important part of maintaining your dental health. Before cavities become painful, your dentist may be able to spot tooth decay and prevent its spread. Whether your cavity is in deep decay or just forming, treatment is necessary. The appropriate treatment for your cavity, however, will depend on its severity. Patients displaying severe tooth decay may have the choice of porcelain crowns or veneers, and patients with little tooth decay may only need a simple resin filling. Cavities that are too large for a resin filling but too small to warrant a crown can be treated with a porcelain inlay or onlay. Dr. Kayserman offers porcelain inlays and onlays at the Warren Smile Center to provide patients with a natural-looking solution for their cavities.
What is a porcelain inlay and onlay?
Porcelain inlays and onlays are used to fill large cavities while conserving the remaining enamel. Unlike crowns and porcelain veneers, which require enamel shaping to prepare the tooth for the procedure, porcelain inlays and onlays actually strengthen your natural tooth. An inlay fills in a cavity in the center of the tooth while an onlay fills the center and top surface. Porcelain inlays and onlays will also match the color of your tooth, creating a more natural-looking, more cosmetically appealing appearance. In addition to their cosmetic advantages, porcelain inlays and onlays also create a better sealant than conventional fillings, reducing the chance of future root canals by preventing further decay.
Benefits Of Porcelain Inlays / Onlays
Conserves your remaining enamel better than crowns
Matches your natural tooth color
Better sealant than conventional filling
Reduced chance of further decay and root canals
What can I expect while receiving a porcelain inlay and onlay?
Porcelain inlays and onlays are lab processed restorations and therefore require two in-office visits. If the onlay is intended to replace an old filling, Dr. Kayserman will remove the old filling during the first appointment. The decay present in the cavity will then be cleaned from the tooth. Once the tooth is cleaned, Dr. Kayserman will make an impression of your tooth. This impression is sent to a lab where your individualized porcelain inlay and onlay will be created. A temporary filling will be implemented until the onlay is ready. During the second appointment, Dr. Kayserman will replace the temporary fillings with the newly lab created porcelain onlay by bonding the onlay to the surface of your natural tooth. Porcelain onlays are durable and permanent, providing a natural-looking and reliable dental treatment for cavities.
