Porcelain and Zirconia Ceramic Crowns At The Warren Smile Center
in New Jersey
Proper dental hygiene is a necessary means to maintaining your oral health. Despite daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing and regular, professional cleanings, however, some sugars and difficult to reach grooves may contribute to tooth decay. Over time, if these grooves are consistently missed during cleaning, cavities will develop. Severe decay found in large cavities can be extremely detrimental to the tooth’s enamel. In circumstances where large cavities have completely compromised the tooth and a simple filling or onlay is insufficient, Dr. Kayserman offers a more comprehensive form of cavity treatment at the Warren Smile Center: porcelain and zirconia crowns.
What are porcelain and zirconia ceramic crowns?
Porcelain and zirconia crowns are two of the options available to treat large cavities in which the remaining tooth would be unable to hold a filling or onlay. The basic procedure for porcelain and zirconia crowns are essentially the same sans the materials used to create each crown.
Zirconia crowns are strong enough on their own to make a metal framework unnecessary. This creates a more natural-looking crown and completely eliminates the risk of an allergic reaction. The differences between the two crown materials available at the Warren Smile Center are highlighted in the chart below:
|Porcelain Crowns||Zirconia Crowns|
|Sometimes requires a metal frame for strength||Needs NO metal framework|
|Possible problems if allergic to metal alloy framework||Eliminates the risk of allergic reactions|
|May darken near gum line with age||Natural-looking even with age|
|Less expensive than zirconia||More expensive than porcelain|
What can I expect the day I receive my porcelain or zirconia ceramic crown?
Patients should plan to receive their porcelain or zirconia crowns in two separate appointments. During the first visit to the Warren Smile Center, Dr. Kayserman will prepare the tooth. This may involve some enamel contouring. Dr. Kayserman will also clean the decay from the cavity. Once the tooth is shaped and cleaned, an impression of the tooth will be molded and sent to the lab. Your porcelain or zirconia crown will be specifically crafted in a laboratory for an individual fit.
Once your crown is created, Dr. Kayserman will affix the crown over your natural tooth during the second appointment. She will fit the crown, make any last minute adjustments to perfect its shape and size, and cement the crown permanently over the natural tooth. Porcelain and zirconia crowns typically last anywhere from 5 to 10 years, depending on continual proper dental care. Unlike traditional silver fillings, onlays, and crowns, the crowns Dr. Kayserman provides at the Warren Smile Center will match the color of your natural teeth, providing an excellent and beautiful treatment for your cavity.
